The Meaning of Beauty Patches Series

Beauty patches were generally made of silk or velvet and were applied to the face as a form of make-up. They became fashionable in 16th-century France, and the fashion persisted into the 18th century.

Besides their decorative value, the patches could hide blemish like pimples or smallpox scars.

During the reign of Louis XIV, the placement of a patch was more than mere decoration or concealment. Basically, locations symbolized a mood or conveyed a message.

  • A beauty patch placed on the center of the forehead means majestic.
  • A beauty patch placed by the corner of the eye means passionate.
  • A beauty patch placed in the middle of the cheek means gallant.
